为人正直，性情豪爽，有正义感，也很精明。他不仅处处关心，体贴部下，也非常爱惜人才，任人唯贤。对部下一惯开诚相见，用而不疑，放心信任，而不管你是从那里来的。他不搞拉伙结帮、勾心斗角，疑神疑鬼、小鸡肚肠那一套，而是虚心纳谏，广开言路，比较讲究民主。所以在那时，他确也团结了一批政治、军事人才和有识之士。

却非常关心、体贴、爱护，而从不耀武扬威，耍大官威风。早年曾是张学良创办的东北大学学生的吴景勋在一篇谈张学良早年轶事的短文中，讲了少帅的往事，其中有两件事特别使人难忘。一件事是：
